Q: What will I learn in this training and how does the therapy and teaching portion of the training become integrated?
A: Therapy in this training: we focus on the way the body responds in different poses and how to help those with injuries. This training will empower you to work one-on-one with clients with most conditions.

You will also learn how to lead a class of "flow yoga" from gentle restorative to a more challenging flow practice, keeping all students safe and all poses effective.

In short, this is a first level (200hr) teacher training with an emphasis on therapy. I.e., lots of anatomy, physiology and pathology as well as teaching ethics and how to compile and compose flow yoga classes.

The Black Mountain Yogasm 200 hr. Yoga Intro to Therapy & Teacher Training provides fundamental information, skills and guidance to prepare you to safely teach Hatha yoga and offer one-on-one yoga therapy while deepening your own practice.

Weekend training modules provide detailed instruction in yoga theory and practice, including asana, anatomy, philosophy, physiology, applied kinesiology, psychology, pathophysiology, ethics, pranayama, meditation, Ayurveda, yoga therapeutics and teaching methodology.

You will learn to design and teach an appropriately sequenced yoga class as well as develop knowledge of contraindications for various postures, breathing techniques and hands-on teaching methods. You will be prepared to lead multi-generational classes, catering to diverse student abilities and interests. You will also learn how to assess the individual needs of a yoga therapy client and to develop and administer a personalized therapeutic yoga routine.

However, you don't have to be a teacher, nor even desire to become a teacher or therapist to attend this course. The program will also expand your own personal yoga practice- offering greater depth and understanding of yoga and strengthening your innate physical, emotional and spiritual abilities.

Therapeutic/Restorative Yoga: Our program emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of Hatha yoga, focusing on developing the assessment, treatment and follow-up skills necessary to create your own One-on-One private Yoga Therapy practice.

Anatomy/Yoga Physiology: We emphasize the role of natural anatomical alignment, expand your awareness of breath, create mindfulness, offer smooth flow sequences, and teach precise verbal cues and physical adjustments. You will gain confidence as an instructor knowing that your personal teaching style is based upon the most sound principles of body mechanics and kinesiology.

Diversity of Practice Styles: We train teachers to lead fun, smooth, safe, deep and fulfilling yoga practices. Upon successful completion, you will be able to lead diverse yoga class styles, from gentle restorative through advanced Hatha flow. Our training includes fundamental instruction and exposure to the following yoga styles: Gentle, Restorative, Hatha Flow, Ashtanga, Anusara, Kundalini, Yoga for Seniors, and Yin Yoga.

Student Experiences

"If you already practice yoga, this training is the perfect step to take to realize that you can do so much more than just doing postures. When you learn what we learn in this program, yoga has so much more meaning. My practice is more joyful- as is my approach to everything else in my life."

-Nancy A.

"The training gave me the most awesome tools to take forth in life. And I love that I can share these healing tools with other people. I’ve learned more positive choices for my own life in what I eat, how I think, and the knowledge of how to take better care of myself. And I can also now use yoga to help those around me. I’m doing things with more awareness on every level- physical, spiritual, and mental. It’s been a true deepening for me. This training is the guidebook to a healthier, fuller life. If Yoga Therapy is what you want to learn, then take this training."

-Caitley S

"The training offers a really strong education about the fine points of yoga. Prior to this I was just doing asanas (poses) in class. Now I understand why I am doing them, how they are going to help me, and how I can use yoga to help others. I’ve learned how to truly live life and also how to help others live life more joyfully. As a whole, I think the training is really pretty neat. It’s fun learning about my body, learning about other people’s bodies, and then getting to put it all into practice. That has been really important to me; not sitting a classroom just watching and talking about theory, but really experiencing the practice of yoga therapy so that it truly makes sense."

- Tara B.

"For me this process has been truly transformational in my personal life. I feel more assured in my yoga practice, and more confident moving through the world in my body. I now have a vocabulary, knowledge base, and a wisdom that I didn’t have before this training. I find myself happier and more at peace. And I feel excited and prepared to share my knowledge with the world. If you’re worried about time, worried about giving up one weekend a month, don’t be. It is a joyful relaxing experience. I finish each weekend feeling alive, well rested, full and ready to begin the week. If you are even considering taking this training, you should do it!"

- Lauren F

"At first I didn’t really have any specific goals for this training in mind. I thought that this would be something that will really help me improve my personal yoga practice. But what I got out of it is so much deeper than that on so many levels. I never really imagined myself as a therapist or even a teacher when I made the commitment to the program. Now I am teaching classes and already have had opportunities to help people to solve a variety of physical problems using yoga. Even if you are just thinking about this program, think deeper and go ahead and make the commitment."

- Martha N

"Brad and Martia have a wealth of knowledge between the two of them. He’s a naturopath and she’s been a yoga therapist and master yoga teacher for a long time. Their combined knowledge is vast and they prepared us so well to become yoga therapists and teachers. They give us the best; we’re not shorted on anything. Nothing is abbreviated. We get the full extent of everything we need to know. And because of that we come away filled with confidence and the knowledge that we can do our very best as a yoga therapist and teacher. It is truly a wonderful spiritual experience; one of growth and learning about the body, heart, and mind. Personally, it is the first experience in which I’ve believed that I can be something else, something better, that I can be a teacher, therapist…a true healer."

- Allyson G.
